THE THREE OF US

BY

“This man, my friend, this marriage,

Was never going to last. Ultimately I think she

Knows that. I think that maybe she’s been waiting all this time for me to save her again like I did that day in the changing room at school.”

The first phrase that comes to mind after reading this book is wahala dey o because WHAT. THE. FUCK is wrong with people? That babe Temi really needs to get her head checked, like girl be fucking for real! Seriously? You are either really confused (because you’ve not yet read the book. I really think you should ) or nodding your head saying things along the line of “yes, that bitch is mental” ( because you and I both know what I mean).

I’m not going to lie, when I first started reading the book, say from page one to like page thirty, I was team Temi ‘cos I know how it feels to have someone you are possessive of reaped out of your hands by someone else especially if you are an antisocial introvert like me who somehow managed to have that one person that You don’t completely hate. For context, my sister and I were really close growing up, she’s two years older than me but we used to act like twins which I think is my mom’s fault ‘cos she pretty much dressed us the same. for most of our childhood (I’m sure my sister hated it). Anywho, growing up I was really shy, no, I don’t think it was just that, I was shy but I also hated people ‘cos humans are annoyinggg ( I wanted to be from out of space like Iniko, lol) so for most of my childhood it was just my sister and I and delulu me thought it was going to be like that forever, boy was I wrong. She had this Friend let’s call her Kathleen( they are not friends anymore, it took a lot for me to stop myself from saying “ guess who stayed bitch, me!), they started getting really close, they even had secret stories and inside jokes, I was enraged, I low key hated the girl but with growing up comes the knowledge that you have to let somethings go so I guess I grew up (not me sounding mature, I’m not o don’t be deceived) anyway I made. my own friends (or should I say my minions because I’m the main character, purrr ), got my own life, experiences that did not include her and it’s funny because nowadays she’s the one that mostly wants to hang out with me.

Anyway back to the story, so Temi who is the real definition of a woke Yoruba bad bitch with zero fucks to give and the wife who is just a really calm, non-confrontational, somewhat bland-vanilla babe have been best friends since forever and it’s the kind of friendship that gives a similar vibe to a religious cult except I would classify this one as a “woke-cult”. They agreed a long time ago to live life for themselves, they both hate miniature humans (children), they agree that marriage is a patriarchal cage which they do not want to get trapped in, they pretty much plan to be baby-girls for life which is calm tbh. Everything was. going as planned until the friend ( who remained unnamed through out the whole story) met the husband (who also remain unnamed), they start dating and baby girl breaks the vow she made to her objectively crazy friend Temi and gets married. The ironic part of the whole story is that Temi was the one who introduced her friend to the guy (husband) mama thought her friend would get bored of him in a week or two but she didn’t and they got married. Sykeee.

So the marriage was going pretty well, Temi totally hated that her friend was changing, turning into a “wife” ; retreated , quiet, submissive, a bit of a push-over. like ewww, we don’t do that around here, so she inserts herself into their marital life (they were literally like trouple without the sex stuff), she tried to make her friend see that the life they had planned was better than the charade she was living. Her friend’s husband totally hated Temi no sweat ‘cos she hated him too. They. (Temi and the husband) compete for the wife’s attention ( it was hilarious), the wife never took sides whenever they are arguing ( although I feel like she was always silently egging Temi on), she just lets it happen and one day everything boils over and the psychopath Temi does something that could potentially ruin their marriage and while they argue Temi just sits there on the couch. and sips wine like the classy bitch that she is.

The book is really good, I wish the husband and the wife had names.
